A New Chapter
We are currently giving The Red Lion a full refurbishment, putting the pub back at the heart of local life. There will be new high tables and more space around the bar for a pint and a catch-up. The pub restaurant will be warmer and cosier, and the garden is being refreshed. We look forward to welcoming you back soon.
About Us
The Red Lion at Water End has been welcoming guests since 1730. It sits in the Hertfordshire countryside, just ten minutes from Berkhamsted. It began life as a coaching inn, with its own brewhouse, two cellars, six rooms and three acres of farmland, complete with animals and farm equipment. Nearly three centuries on, it’s still a place to stop, settle in and stay a while.
Food & Drink
From our open kitchen, we serve a menu with a Mediterranean influence alongside well-loved pub classics. Expect Neapolitan-style pizzas, spiced lamb kofta and slow-braised lamb shank, plus cider-battered fish and chips and a homemade beef, ale and mushroom pie. Our chef’s specials change daily, so there’s always something new to try.
Breakfast and Sunday roasts are still on the menu too. Families are always welcome, with a dedicated children’s menu, and most dietary requirements are easily catered for. Four-legged friends are welcome as well, with treats waiting at the bar.
Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, meeting friends for lunch or popping in after work, there’s a place for you at The Red Lion.
